Strongly endorse this answer. Analog is very capable, but because it implements algorithms in hardware rather than software, it got overtaken in the market long ago.

Many of the "nerds" who would have been researching electronics are a lot more interested in magic and so things like transistors and furthermore electronics are left unexplored.</i>
@MonicaCellio, thanks for remembering. :-) It started to work out well. I sold another story to the next anthology in the series, After Oil 4: The Future's Distant Shores. That story, "Finding Flotsam", was set in the same world, but per editorial constraints I ended up bumping it to ~3970 Gregorian. Unfortunately, a series of real-life disasters intervened. I vanished for several years. But I am writing again now.
