So this is a sci fi setting. I want to come up with good names for cities on other planets. For languages, I would say city names would be either English, Mandarin, Russian, Hindi, Japanese, French, or German. Although they would have people of many different cultures within the cities, so could even be other languages. How do you come up with a name for a city?

$\begingroup$ 'Good' city names are an opinion. I VTC. As @YogevLevy suggests, online generators can help. $\endgroup$

  • $\begingroup$ Good is opinion and onions, but even if it wasn't, asking for something about so wildly different cultures is too broad to be only asking for bread ^^. I mean, French, Hindi, Japanese and Russian don't even share the same alphabet and ways to tell things, and that's only half of the cultures you envision! $\endgroup$

This is an opinion-based question in terms of what a 'good' city name is subjective, but I can provide some basic information on a few ways cities are named to help you out.

The name of a city can be partially or fully derived from a location such as the -chester suffix which refers to the city having been a site for a Roman military camp in the past.

Other common city elements can be words associated with having a positive descriptor such as referring to beauty or strength. Los Angeles is translated as 'The City of Angels' as is an example.

In addition cities may be called by a different name based on the language someone speaks. London is Londres in French as an example.

A couple questions that could help you decide what you could call your cities are:

  • Where were the first human settlers in that area originally from?
  • What is the surrounding environment like? Is it by a river or a mountain?

  • $\begingroup$ Hi and welcome :). Indeed, I agree with L.Dutch, it can leave you annoyed as the asker and you would need to try to edit the question to get it reopened, this without invalidating your answer. [...] $\endgroup$

I know that you don't have (yet) the right to comment on questions you don't own, but that will happen quickly if you are active on Worldbuilding-SE (I think it's at 50 or 100 score or so). If you wish to know more, there's an ongoing debate on why and especially how we should see and present not answering here $\endgroup$
