Oct 2, 2017 at 13:44 comment added talrnu @m.fuss The question depicts this scenario in a nebula. True they're not as dense as most sci-fi would have you believe, but still at least on the order of dozens of particles per cubic cm (so at least millions per cubic meter, not hundreds).
Sep 29, 2017 at 14:13 comment added m.fuss @talrnu space is empty. REALY empty. A few hundred molecules per m³. the matter-AM reactions will be to few to even create a visible spark. and the impuls of the ejection will move it away from the ship on a constant rate.
Sep 28, 2017 at 12:13 comment added Cees Timmerman @talrnu, blasting the antimatter with temporary EM field away from the bulk of normal matter is the best thing to do. Even if it hits something more massive than the ship, the antimatter shrapnel is more likely to miss thanks to distance.
Sep 28, 2017 at 5:29 comment added talrnu @m.fuss Antimatter reacts violently with normal matter on contact. Dumping antimatter into space risks an interaction with e.g. dust/nebula particles, debris, or even the ship's own hull, and likely sparking a chain reaction backflashing into the ship's interior. Without the power to outrun that, simply dumping it into space is nearly as suicidal as doing nothing at all.

Sep 25, 2017 at 11:14 comment added Mason Wheeler @m.fuss Come on, you've seen the show. Has ejecting the warp core ever worked successfully in an emergency?
Sep 25, 2017 at 11:02 comment added m.fuss Why not simply dump the AM into space and stay on the ship instead of dumping the crew and keep the AM on the ship?
