The big issue with it is it is EXTREMELY friable(basically very small shocks will shatter it) So your axe wouldn't destroy it because it isn't strong, but because it is breakable. I know it is a technicality, but ask any materials engineer....it matters.. aerogel.org/?p=1058

Jun 20, 2017 at 14:26 | comment | added | Draco18s no longer trusts SE | An axe? I'm pretty sure your bare hands would be sufficient.
Jun 20, 2017 at 10:22 | comment | added | Innovine | I inhaled aerogel particles. Worried about it for a few minutes but since I didn't see any effects I assume it dissolved.
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:57 | comment | added | Raditz_35 | @L.Dutch Long term yes. Short term, for the day it takes to take apart your maze? Nobody cares. Especially criminals. Did it myself countless times
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:55 | comment | added | L.Dutch♦ | @Rekesoft, I am fairly sure that breathing aerogel dust as result of crumbling is far from healthy. People I have seen working with aerogel had to wear masks to prevent inhalation of particles.
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:51 | comment | added | L.Dutch♦ | @Fl.pf. I think 20 meters of aerogel are more than enough to hide the location of the exit gate. So, you might guess you have to go up, but up where?
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:47 | comment | added | Fl.pf. | @Separatrix eh, still doesnt matter though.. (maybe I should get a coffee)
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:44 | comment | added | Separatrix | @Fl.pf., 2d mazes are ultimately trivial, 3d mazes not so much, that comment falls before the edit (and my first cup of tea).
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:43 | comment | added | Fl.pf. | @L.Dutch what does it matter if its 3D?? Then I'll just cut diagonally upwards
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:34 | comment | added | Separatrix | @Mołot, not to mention any surviving blocks of aerogel you could use to build steps.
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:18 | comment | added | Mołot | 8 meters should be easy enough to climb for someone prepared to do this.
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:03 | comment | added | Rekesoft | @Hyfnae That's a bug, not a feature. If the maze were made of stone, bricks or even wood, when collapsing it could be fatal. With aerogel it's going to be harmless.
Jun 20, 2017 at 8:00 | comment | added | Rekesoft | Even with a multiple layered maze, you could cut your way to the stairway, then cut your way to the exit door. At worst case you can turn the maze into a standard grid, thus making it trivial to traverse.
Jun 20, 2017 at 7:58 | comment | added | Hyfnae | @Separatrix But if you get at it with an axe, won't the maze lose its integrity and make the treasure room inaccessible... Not to mention bury you under grams of rubble.
