May 4, 2017 at 16:56 comment added Kat @Criggie if iron is so rare, then how does it end up in blood or vegetables in the first place? It has to come from the environment first.

May 4, 2017 at 14:34 comment added RonJohn Lead is soft, and has a very low melting point. Wholly unsuited to making guns. Great for ammunition, though.
May 4, 2017 at 14:19 comment added highpriestofpie @criggie there is a faction in my world that alchemicaly distills iron from the blood of humans, but the process is complex, and long. They are small in number, but they are the only group with a decent amount of iron.

May 4, 2017 at 8:47 comment added Rigop You should establish a taboo instead of searching for a technologic limitation. Melee weapons is the 0 level of technologie since the flint stone to the pointed toothbrush in prison nowadays.
May 4, 2017 at 6:38 comment added Criggie @JohnDallman if Iron was rare enough and valuable enough, people would be farming it out of the blood of animals, aliens, or humans. Or spinach/silverbeet.

May 3, 2017 at 22:28 comment added John Dallman If iron is incredibly rare, you're going to have to re-invent biochemistry too. Iron is needed for all sorts of enzymes, as well as carrying oxygen. Here's an article about that. Social reasons, probably involving a very controlling government in the past, are going to work better.

May 3, 2017 at 14:43 comment added Erik @cybernard the range of old Western guns isn't that high. And even in modern times, melee weapons still exist and are still used.
May 3, 2017 at 13:38 comment added fdomn-m Along the lines of @Criggie 's comment: In the Dune series they have shields that do the opposite of what you want - stop fast-moving objects (eg bullets) but allow slow-moving. Can you have a shield that does the opposite? (allow fast-moving bullets, but effectively stop all (relatively) slow-moving melee weapons). Doesn't answer the question directly of what guns could be made out of, but might explain the lack of use of simple tree-branch clubs / rocks.

May 3, 2017 at 2:49 comment added cybernard You need to have all your enemies use guns or ranged weapons. No one bring a sword to a gun fight. Nobody will make melee weapons because they are near certain death. They will kill you at 1000 feet, and your melee weapon won't be any use.
May 3, 2017 at 2:01 comment added Criggie Is it possible to change the physiology of the world's inhabitants? Make their flesh tough and blade-resistant but brittle and vulnerable to high kinetic impacts? You can still have knives/swords, they're just unlikely to do much damage unless the damage is kinetic and not cutting - this would require "less sword" and more "sharpened club"

May 2, 2017 at 20:03 comment added TylerH Gun barrels are made from steel, and before that, iron. So it looks like you're going to have to find a new explanation. Best bet is to stick to bows, crossbows, and spears+atlatls.

May 2, 2017 at 15:41 comment added Josh King I think you are overlooking how the simplest melee weapons i.e. clubs don't need any metal at all. You can also make knives and cutting weapons with sharpened stone. I think you are going to need social reasons rather than technological limitations.
May 2, 2017 at 15:41 comment added Jeff Zeitlin Any metal that can stand the breech pressure of black powder is going to be good enough to use for swords.
May 2, 2017 at 15:41 comment added Deolater I'm having trouble imagining a practical firearm design that uses metals that aren't strong enough for swords or knives. If anything, firearms have consistently required better metallurgy than primitive weapons.
