Jan 16, 2017 at 7:07 | comment | added | IndigoFenix | @Mendeleev If it stayed entirely submerged, it could walk or swim fine; buoyancy makes weight irrelevant so the square-cube law doesn't really apply to aquatic animals (as far as support is concerned anyway; energy and oxygen are still an issue). But if we have a turtle island situation where part of the body was held above the water, there would need to be some way for it to support that weight. The most logical way to support a large mass above the water level is to make it float, otherwise we'd be dealing with the same issues that make giant animals implausible on land. | |
