That aside, consider that races may focus on different weapon types due to what areas of technology they've advanced. In your species' case, perhaps they had an easy way to make/harvest explosives that turned out to be also easy to refine and their science and manufacturing got that out the door earlier than other kinds of weapons. You could think of it as being further along the "explosives" category of their "tech tree".

Nov 2, 2016 at 20:33 comment added Santiago You're describing a torpedo or a rocket, therefore you don't need a turret. The only reason to have a turret is for aim, so the shell won't go towards your ship while looking for its objective.
