The length of a shadow at high noon, the direction of that particular sun's setting and rising, counting steps, using that laser distance thingy to read the terrain. Droping a beacon at a certain point and then using that as a starting reference frame. Stuff like that. If the planet happens to be full of swamp grass and has three moons, it shouldn't affect how you would use your brain to figure out were you were.
