Note that the Iroquois were a hybrid farming (by the women) and hunter/gatherer (by the men) community. The value of the farming income was recognized by giving the women their own council, which sent a representative to the (men's) war council. This gave them a higher density of population, a distinct advantage in warfare (although their Huron/Algonquian enemies in Ontario and Quebec had a similar culture that probably only lagged by a few generations) and possibly improved their immune systems | |
