I know many countries with high birth rates are not first world countries, but they have access to some industrial process to make medice posible. then there are violent conflicts, natural desasters and disease. Wild animal attacks would also have a more dramatic impact to the initial population growth than it would with todays population. i think a bit higher inital starting population would be needed.

Dec 16, 2022 at 11:22 comment added Cadence I think your math is off - you've calculated the result if a population started at 1 billion and decayed 3% per year, but that's slightly different than starting small and growing 3% per year. The total you want is 1,000,000,000 / 1.03^500 ~= 381. Still quite small, all things considered.
