Jul 17, 2022 at 10:07 comment added Vesper @PostlimFort Science would a priori expend too much energy attempting to hover near a portal, while Magic has at least bubble-head spell to retain breathable atmosphere regardless of surroundings, usually depicted as easy and low cost. That's why I assumed Magic to take upper hand in such a connection. In case Science has anti-gravity, then there could be anything from offshore market to open war, depending on whether Magic also can control the portal and inter-world relations.
Jul 17, 2022 at 0:52 comment added Robbie Goodwin Isn't the problem that the Science world has discarded the gold standard… else, why would you be Asking? Whatever your understanding, any magic world dealing with mere mortals can do whatever it likes… that's the nature of magic. Whatever your understanding, any non-magic realm should be able to establish relations, including exchange rates, with anywhere else you can imagine in the same way as real-world realms. Why is that hard?

Jul 16, 2022 at 12:03 comment added Philipp The scenario you have here is not any different from how international trade and international currency exchange works in our world. You might want to read up on that.

Jul 16, 2022 at 11:18 comment added AlexP Since Magicia is for some bizarre reason still using commodity money, the entire issue of "exchange rates" does not exist. Commodities (such as wheat, petroleum, iron, potatoes, gold, macadamia nuts, silver, cotton and bronze) already have a price in Magicia and a price in Scientia. That's all. (Think about it: let's say that a Magicia solidus is 4.5 grams of gold, just as it was in the days of Constantine. Its value cannot be greater than the price of 4.5 grams of gold, and it cannot be less -- it is exactly the value of 4.5 grams of gold.)

Jul 16, 2022 at 7:32 comment added Postlim Fort @Vesper Science can do a similar thing. so trade can happen even if Magic isn't good enough. they would just be trading on the Magic side.

Jul 16, 2022 at 6:45 comment added Vesper Both sides of portal are at respective Karman lines, right? Then, if Magic can float up there by any means, they would control the exchange rate, I assume they won't allow Science money in at all, also they would block any attempt of Science to throw in a nuke as a means of self-defense. Then they would have an outpost city in Science, likely exactly under the portal, to shorten time to reach it, and only then could trade start. If not, OR if magic does not work as good in Science as it does in Magic, no trade is possible thus no exchange rate.
