Apr 20, 2022 at 16:48 | comment | added | Sith Philosopher | I hope you can understand that as a first time poster I may have failed to clearly ask my question. I know AI does not exist and that it's my world and I can do what I want. I am hoping to find comparisons to human mental development and how a life form near indistinguishable from a computer might be different based on our understanding of how a computer program may tackle those obstacles differently. Seeing as others have given great reference material on how we grow I think I will close this. I hope I can continue to find help with future questions.

You get to figure out how AI develop in your world. They will have exactly as many developmental phases as you choose for them to have. This is something you need to decide for yourself, rather than ask us to brainstorm for you.

Apr 20, 2022 at 3:24 | comment | added | Sith Philosopher | I don’t mean to sound like an idiot and I don’t pretend that computers can do everything instantaneously. I meant to agree that computers can process things faster than humans. If you have experience with machine learning I’m interested in learning from you. Can you talk about how machine learning works, if possible extrapolate how it may grow into actual sentience?
Apr 19, 2022 at 17:14 | comment | added | AlexP | "Computing time allows for basically instant growth and development": This is most welcome news to the people working on machine learning. If you know how to do this, run, do not walk, to the patent office. You will become rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Apr 19, 2022 at 14:53 | comment | added | Escaped dental patient. | I think this is an inspired and inspiring question. It turns out so broad for this site, that I'm not sure you're going to get a concise answer that'll fit here. For inspiration: Best single article is this, covers everything with many approaches and models. Same again, different writers, never neglect the poets and writer's perspectives: Seven ages of man.

Edit for clarity and to specify this is intended to be a slow and customized experience

Apr 19, 2022 at 14:06 | comment | added | Sith Philosopher | Thank you for your response, I am aware that computing time allows for basically instant growth and development. In this case the actual work done is within the crystal structure which start very small and is not as efficient as actual computers but is where "they" exist. The development of the consciousness is directly tied to the growth of the crystal. Even if this is not specifically Hard sci-fi this is a softer plot driven part of it.
Apr 19, 2022 at 13:32 | comment | added | John O | For it to be "designed", this means that not only have the fundamental principles been worked out, but that they've had enough practice to then go on to design AI to work in a way that it would not. For an AI, any possible stages would last microseconds... things move more quickly for those of us who aren't meat. And given what we know about meat-people, they aren't trying to become persons, but gods. Not being meat-people, this could actually become an achievable goal. And in less time than it took for you to read my comment.
