(Rocket science is actually pretty easy.) Oh, and I assume you meant 12 km/s and not 12 m/s. | |

@MichaelKjörling You only need 12m/s if you're OK with going in the same direction as your rotation. However, if you want 42km/s velocity away from the sun, you need [almost] all 42.

Which needs approximately the same amount of fuel, but now for decelleration. Note that the Earth already travels at about 30 km/s in its orbit around the sun (in a solar-centric reference frame), so you "only" need to impart a 12 km/s delta-V to reach solar escape velocity. Only 11,999.996 km/s to go. | |
