Sep 27, 2021 at 17:38 comment added Keith Morrison I suspect the first thing you need to do is overcome the unconscious bias that "religion" by necessity must be something like the Abrahamic religions where the deity(ies) are omnipotent, all-encompassing entities. Consider the Greek myths about Sisyphus: although (eventually) punished, they show Sisyphus, a mortal, pulling off cons against and even trapping gods time after time. The myths show gods that are worshiped, but that at the same time can be manipulated and used.

Sep 26, 2021 at 11:28 comment added 4.12.22.4.18.0. That sounds similar to how the romans adored the greater gods (Jupiter, Bacus, Marte, Mercury, Venus, etc.) but they "employed" minor gods/familiar spirits for small things like protecting the family, preventing the food from rotting, etc.

Sep 24, 2021 at 22:17 comment added Goodies Why can't a demon be tortured ? suppose it will help cleansing them to be more holy ? Even prophets can be tortured, no problem ! their "suffering releases us from our sins" they say.. In religion, anything goes. There is always a story.

Sep 24, 2021 at 18:22 comment added jamesqf Consider that the people at the top of a religious organization, and in particular the founders, often don't actually believe in the religion. So someone who figures out how to bind a daemon realizes that he can use it to convince the gullible to follow his religion, thus giving him power.
Sep 24, 2021 at 16:56 comment added Cain Also worth reading N.K. Jemison's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms for an example of enslaved-but-somewhat-worshipped-gods.

Sep 24, 2021 at 15:43 comment added Klaus Haukenstein One of the main characters in Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker is worshipped by people who also keep their deities trapped in a "paradise" where they're not allowed to leave -- not quite enslavement but creates some interesting dynamics that I think are worth looking in to.

Sep 24, 2021 at 6:57 comment added j4nd3r53n not quite answer, but perhaps a hint of an inspiration: Gods are created by human belief, so being dependent of faith, they will be slaves of humans (read Terry Pratchett: 'Small Gods')
