Would still probably need suppliers though - or a special (read fictional) method for catching the bugs in enough quantity. I thought that method was more common in medieval Europe anyway, with the shells being a Roman Empire method they lost in the dark ages? (Again, no expert, open to correction)

Thus, only the very rich could afford to have anyone do that much labor. The people making the dye could sell it for so much that it made sense to sell it and use the money to buy food instead of trying to use it themselves.

Other dyes will also produce much brighter colours than you are expecting if the hair is prepared by bleaching. Blue and green are not out of the realm of possibilities. Red, orange, yellow are very much possible and rather easy to achieve.

Someone has to be the creator and seller of the dye - if MC can create their own, there is no need to purchase (although if they can create their own, they could become rich anyway, by making additional and selling it)
