Solution is very story-dependent; your one is valid only if underlying technology allows for very fast acceleration to near-speed-of-light, OTOH if acceleration requires a sizeable amount of time (~one year or more) or need expensive resources the "polling" method might rapidly become unfeasible, while still usable for long haul trips. | |

See the end of Joe Haldeman's classic The Forever War for a very early example. | |
