Jan 29, 2021 at 20:06 comment added rek @RobWatts The planet's young atmosphere would have been enough to make the oceans salty; erosion from land (and remember, this place had land for billions of years) just makes it saltier.
Jan 29, 2021 at 17:49 comment added Rob Watts Ocean salt primarily comes from rocks on land - prior to the ocean levels being lowered, the water might be what we would think of as freshwater.
Jan 29, 2021 at 14:33 comment added Globin347 I have since specified that a fair bit of water was left. The portal did not drain all the oceans. I apologize for the many edits; There were several factors I hadn't considered when I first wrote the question.
Jan 29, 2021 at 14:24 comment added rek @VitalyDenisov Because 4 edits ago OP said the water drained away through a portal at the bottom of the ocean, which would leave small but very briny lakes, which would evaporate and quickly be lost to the crust.
Jan 29, 2021 at 13:51 comment added Vitaly Denisov Why would normal water cycle stop? If there's enough water left it would rain and snow and rivers would flow and fresh water would gather into lakes. So in some time, I suppose it would form a normal soil similar to Earth soil.
Jan 29, 2021 at 12:24 comment added KeizerHarm @Globin347 I don't think the change was that drastic. You can keep the question imho.

Jan 29, 2021 at 5:22 comment added Globin347 ...I hadn’t heard that before... in any case, should I just delete this question and write a new one? There are so many details That didn’t occur to me... Worst case scenario, I have to delete and re—create this question two or three times before I get it right.

Jan 29, 2021 at 5:03 comment added Globin347 Fixed. Land plants are now briefly mentioned in the question.
Jan 29, 2021 at 5:01 comment added Christopher Hostage The missing item is land plants. At the time of writing, the question mentions no plants for animals to eat.
Jan 29, 2021 at 4:59 comment added Globin347 ...assume there is a decent amount of water left. I didn’t mean to imply it would all be gone. Is there a given period of time after which it would be feasible to bring in land plants?
