Kinetic Energy Weapons

The tungsten rods that you've heard about are what are generally termed 'kinetic energy weapon', or to use the slang term 'Rod from God'. Basically, you just get a really heavy metal rod (tungsten works fairly well, though theirthere are alternatives), fire it into the atmosphere, and let kinetic energy and gravity take over from there. All the power of a nuclear bomb with none of the fallout, very difficult to detect and very difficult to deflect, and not to mention that all it requires in the way of manufacture is getting the weapon up there in the first place - no need to fool around with uranium enrichment plants which can be bombed / blow up in your face. The US government has considered the possibility of placing a satellite in orbit with just such a weapon code-named 'Project Thor'.
