Then, if you can find something that can take the heat, how do you get it into position when the flow that it's supposed to block is on the order of tens to hundreds of thousands of tons per second.

Jun 2, 2020 at 22:31 comment added Mark Capping could be a bit tricky: the air's 5500 degrees. If that's 5500 F, there are plenty of materials that could do the job, but if it's 5500 C or 5500 K, even exotic ceramics such as hafnium carbide are going to melt.
