Broadly, their livelihoods depended on skilled manufacture of handmade crafts, but textile mills made their work and skills obsolete. This began to return them to the economic servitude that was even more popular at the time with wealthy factory owners than it is today.
They fought back by actively destroying the machines (what they are most famed for) and through occasional violence.
