Mar 21, 2020 at 10:39 comment added Peter - Reinstate Monica Exactly. The Eddorians, a dictatorial, power-hungry race, come into our universe from an alien space-time continuum and threaten the Arisians.
Mar 20, 2020 at 16:55 comment added Freddie R This is somewhat similar to the idea of the first Culture novel, Consider Phlebas. While members of the Culture live largely as the question has described, there is another empire of (roughly) similar strength that do not, and their goals are at odds.
Mar 20, 2020 at 15:25 comment added Jared Smith Addition to the answer: peaceful transhumanist civ engineers weapons (biological, mechanical, viral, etc) to fight their external enemies but their own creations turn against them.

Mar 18, 2020 at 19:58 comment added Zwuwdz A slight addition: these super-duper transhumans are at least as smart as us, so they can probably foresee the obvious possibility that some less developed species or even some hidden luddite humans might attack them. So, they probably don't entirely remove the concept of war from the species. If they are so advanced and focused on the greater good, maybe they can have a form of war they practice internally. Perhaps they are all uploaded so death doesn't bug them, their training takes place in advanced VR, or they are so enlightened that getting killed in a practice battle is thought worth it.

Mar 18, 2020 at 15:03 comment added Joe Bloggs The rational approach is sending someone to beat them at their national sport, making them so paranoid in the process that their society disintegrates and you can mop up what’s left. Oh, wait, that’s The Player of Games, isn’t it?
Mar 18, 2020 at 14:06 comment added StephenG - Help Ukraine @Renan I presume that was said by an arms salesman.
Mar 18, 2020 at 13:58 comment added The Square-Cube Law Yeah, like someone said: if you want peace, prepare for war.
