Mar 3, 2020 at 14:49 comment added Justin Thyme the Second Someone tried a cure for baldness, or a funky new hair color, that instead caused the skull bone and skin to turn transparent (or dissolve).
Mar 3, 2020 at 14:44 comment added Justin Thyme the Second This would also make it a display of status or intelligence. Only the 'top tier' would have a 'full window'. The lower the stature in society, the 'less decorative' the window.
Mar 3, 2020 at 13:27 comment added Gilsido Would have been my answer as well, advantages relative to Andon's one are wider range in fashion (medical instruments are usually quite normailzed) like dyed glass, curved patterns in the glass, wilder shape etc. It also allows some people to refuse to wear them, or to wear oppaque ones as a protest against this fashion (with Adon's answer those people can exist to but they are an anti-vax equivalent)

Mar 2, 2020 at 19:19 comment added Mermaker Since the OP clarified that this is an artificial feature that is added surgically, this answer is probably the best one.
Mar 2, 2020 at 16:28 comment added SRM @WGroleau as I said earlier... I think the OP wants this dome to be a natural feature of the alien, not the result of surgery. I’ve asked the OP to clarify.
Mar 2, 2020 at 14:25 comment added WGroleau @SRM, did we have a reason (other than aesthetics) for the first tattoo or nose piercing? But if you want a reason, how about a clear insert replaced a part of damaged skull, and when the patient’s (something) I proved dramatically, research found that it would work for anyone in the species.
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:55 comment added SRM I’m going to ask the OP to clarify.
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:54 comment added SRM And that was my objection to this answer... it’s off base from the question premise in my opinion. :-) @user253751
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:53 comment added Criticizing Israel not allowed @SRM Well, the answer says that it's a cosmetic procedure they do, not that it evolved.
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:52 comment added SRM The question doesn’t actually say that. @user253751 There was a secondary question about humans replicating this with modern tech (I removed that tangent to keep the question on focus). Given that the dome is mentioned in the same breath as the reptile tail, I think OP intends this to be an evolved trait of this species.
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:48 comment added Criticizing Israel not allowed @SRM Well, the answer says that it's a cosmetic procedure they do, not that it evolved.
Mar 2, 2020 at 13:08 comment added SRM It does need some reason why it happened initially... the aesthetic argument can carry it along. Humans might think four arms is awesome, but we cannot breed-select to enhance a trait that isn’t there.
