And the big source of loss wasn't to bacterial spoilage, but to consumption by vermin, which is also expensive and/or labor-intensive to deal with. | |

Introduce low-tech methods like drying, salting, silage, etc, and ensure they are used by everybody. Centralise storage of grain - see Ancient Egypt. Merciless rodent control. | |
