The firefighter who was on the scene describes how they test for consciousness (1) Try to talk to the patient (2) tap them on the shoulder (3) if no response, apply a painful stimulus (4) try a more painful stimulus. If no response to pain then they know consciousness is seriously impaired That's just paramedics who are on the scene. Once they get to hospital the real tests will start. It's very unlikely anyone can fake it. | |

Were they found just lying in the road unconscious? How did they get to hospital? Are they totally unconscious (or pretending to be)? Are they faking memory loss or inability to speak? Etc. | |
