Jul 20, 2019 at 11:02 comment added Jontia @ChrisBarry the OP is asking about possible social consequences. They don't have to be fully justified by the physical reality. Egyptians used to bury actual servants with Pharoahs because they believed they journeyed to the afterlife with them. These elves have much better proof of reincarnation if they have lived through MaxElf before. They could believe almost anything off the back of that.
Jul 19, 2019 at 21:24 comment added Chris Barry Should I accept that the death of my body is not the death of "me" because my fondness for frog-and-parsnip ice cream and the music of Conlon Nancarrow will live on in another body which will not know how this fondness originated? In essence I am saying that, unless it includes transfer of memories, reincarnation is empty mysticism and, within the context of the OP's story, it should be treated as a superstition, not a physical characteristic of the fictional universe.
Jul 19, 2019 at 20:50 comment added Chris Barry We need clarification from the OP about what is transferred in reincarnation. An axe is not a good analogy. Instead try: Afua lives in Lagos and likes fufu with groundnut soup, Fred lives in hull and like bubble-and-squeak with sausages. 1) The body in Hull wakes up thinking it is Fred, remembers all of Fred's life but wonders where in Hull he could get a bowl of fufu, while in Lagos Afua suddenly has a passion for bubble-and-squeak. Or 2) The body in Hull wakes up remembering life as a woman in Lagos but liking bubble-and-squeak. Who is where in each case?

Jul 18, 2019 at 21:47 comment added Lupus @Separatrix As souls are currently unproven and unprovable (they may still exist), their are many interpretations of it. Memory is just one part of the self. Awareness, tendencies, personality, disposition ... Yes, these may only be the sum of memories, or if they exist, linked with the souls.
Jul 18, 2019 at 13:45 comment added Separatrix Your grandfather's axe only applies when parts are replaced one at a time, you've put a new head on a new handle, it could be my grandfather's axe, your brother's axe, your great uncle's axe. All you know is that one day it will become somebody's grandfather's axe.
Jul 18, 2019 at 13:29 comment added Jontia @Separatrix that's how you see it :) It isn't necessarily how a society that's lived with it for millennia see it. This is my Grandfather's Axe, it's had a new handle and a new blade and the design has changed, but it's still my grandfather's axe.
Jul 18, 2019 at 13:26 comment added Separatrix If the soul holds no memory then it's not the same person. The hardware has been replaced, the disc has been wiped, the fact that the operating system is the same is irrelevant.
