Feb 27, 2019 at 4:20 comment added Mazura "For the same reason some [people] do in real life"... some humans are jerks - idc how well you've screened them; they're still humans trapped in their own shells filled with emotion and utterly subject to the human condition at all times. And nowhere is that more self-evident then while traveling in the unforgivable vacuum of space.

Feb 25, 2019 at 19:11 comment added AndyD273 @ErosRising And it's easy to explain as "part of a mandatory basic survival kit". Early on a law is passed that all space craft carry a survival kit just in case they land in some remote location on Earth and need to get by for a week until they are found. Time goes on and they start traveling to Mars regularly, but the law is never changed, and why remove it just because you're heading to Mars. It's just easier to leave them alone since there has never been a reason to mess with it. It's just another piece of equipment like a hammer that is only pulled out for maintenance by port authorities.

Feb 25, 2019 at 17:29 comment added Dohn Joe The russian Cosmonauts had guns with them for the same reason, you're obliged to carry a gun on Svalbard. How knows, where in the vast expanse of the Soviel Union you touch down, and what is waiting there for you.
Feb 25, 2019 at 16:54 comment added Aserre @ErosRising not on Mars, sure, but if they are bringing the minerals back to earth for processing, this scenario can happen.
Feb 25, 2019 at 16:00 comment added ErosRising -1 This goes against what is stated in the question - that it's known there's no hostile species on mars
Feb 25, 2019 at 13:44 comment added Miller86 came here to give this exact answer. +1. Its the exact reasoning I've used in short stories I've written where the landing was usually in the wilderness rather than deep ocean.
Feb 25, 2019 at 9:51 comment added Spoki0 - Reinstate Monica @Nyos sysselmannen.no/en/Shortcuts/Firearms It is not required to carry a gun specifically, just recommended. Point is that you might crash land and need to defend yourself, as the answer stated. If you happen to land on Svalbard, you'd be a criminal if you didn't have the means to chase off polar bears!
Feb 25, 2019 at 9:23 comment added Nyos @Spoki0: Not just "told to", AFAIK it's required by law. youtube.com/watch?v=ch7HwhGynXk a bit off-topic here though.
Feb 25, 2019 at 9:19 comment added Spoki0 - Reinstate Monica In Svalbard, you are basically told to bring a gun if you're heading outside town due to the danger of polar bears.
