But yeah I don't mean to single out rivers, all natural borders work. Deserts, mountains, marshes, rivers, ravines, seas, cliffs. | |

Rome had a lot of territory it wasn't using so I don't know how much of a broad example they are. Generally a kingdom that sees land with a water source as a resource will take both sides of a river if it hasn't met a significant threat on that edge of its border. | |
