Even solar flares WILL reach Mars, due to its lower magnetic fields and thinner atmosphere. Also, somebody on the Other side of the Earth would have communicated about the event to somebody on Mars.

This wasn't a warning by some third party, recommending to plant a decoy, it was just a bulldozer announcement by the invaders themselves. They were going to target Earth anyway, and just urged humans to move out or be erased on Earth. As this becomes clear, the people of Earth frantically start to re-establish contact to Mars and move there, but aren't trusted anymore, prompting a large-scale war between the two planets before the aliens ever arrive.
