Jan 28, 2022 at 1:09 comment added WhatRoughBeast @John - I'm not at all certain where you are coming from. I'm not suggesting anything "magical". I'm simply stating that just because you think Switzerland's culture of military/firearms training is responsible for the country's low crime rate, that does not establish it, nor does it make it any better than any other unproved explanation. "Is much more founded" is simply your opinion. It may be right, it may be wrong, but in the absence of demonstrated expertise in the field, it's still an unproved opinion backed by no evidence of causality.
Jan 27, 2022 at 21:45 comment added John @WhatRoughBeast as is the idea that the Swiss culture is just magically different for some unexplained reason , however you can demonstrate Switzerland's mandatory military service policy with a single link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Switzerland and assuming widespread extensive training in firearms will change cultural firearms practices is much more founded assertion than saying some unknown factor must be it instead.
Jan 27, 2022 at 4:58 comment added WhatRoughBeast @John - While tempting, that is what is called an unsupported assertion. Your bare statement is insufficient evidence.
Jan 25, 2022 at 1:19 comment added John @WhatRoughBeast nearly every adult male in Switzerland has gone through that military training, that is WHY it has a drastic effect on the culture. As opposed to the US where training is slipshod to nonexistent for most of the population.
Mar 10, 2019 at 3:02 comment added Thucydides It still is a factor, the Swiss have some of the lowest rates of guncrime despite the ready availability of automatic firearms.
Mar 6, 2019 at 18:08 comment added Ryan_L Training only makes you less likely to shoot someone accidentally. It does not make you less likely to shoot someone on purpose.
Jan 23, 2019 at 5:35 comment added WhatRoughBeast "yet some of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world. This is largely because each citizen has been carefully instructed and drilled in the proper use of firearms through military service." This is a blatantly arbitrary statement, with no obvious supporting evidence. Cultural attitudes toward violence vary wildly between cultures, and apparently the Swiss have simply (!) developed a culture which discourages gun violence (and violence in general). Crediting this to the quality of military firearms training is a pretty mind-boggling assertion.
Sep 21, 2018 at 12:00 comment added Denis Note that this answer has some basic facts about gun ownership in Switzerland wrong: most of firearms in possession are actually semi-automatic; getting your service weapon after training is just an option that still requires obtaining a permit first (which are not granted to those with mental illness, criminal record, known alcohol or drug abuse); the practice of handing out ammo has ceased (and it was in a sealed box and subject to inspections), etc. Disqualification factors for gun permits are probably the most important reason here (and that you keep the weapon at home, not carry around)
Sep 21, 2018 at 9:16 comment added UEFI Switzerland is much richer than the US (GDP per capita) and has far fewer people living in poverty. This is the real reason for the low rates of crime in Switzerland. Poverty causes crime in the US, not guns.
Sep 20, 2018 at 20:55 comment added HonoredMule Why does every discussion of Switzerland in regard to armed crime focus exclusively on the "armed" part with not even a mention of the "crime" part? Isn't the latter going to be where we find the larger and more significant differentiating factors?
Sep 20, 2018 at 20:53 comment added Alexander Good, but I don't think it answers the question. the real Swiss police is armed.
Sep 20, 2018 at 17:09 comment added Thucydides I was commenting on the fact your situation described the majority of American households even into the 1950's. The large number of gun owners and the multi generational teaching of firearms safety and use meant that the United States was also generally safe, and indeed when you look at very detailed statistics, you discover that the high rate of American gun crime is actually concentrated in a few urban areas (and indeed a few neighbourhoods of these cities)
Sep 20, 2018 at 16:42 comment added anon Most rural homes still have several firearms in them. I have family who live on a ranch; they have a short-barreled AR-15 to get coyotes out of their fields (usually the loud noise is enough, but some refuse to take the hint and need to be shot to stop killing livestock, and you definitely can't safely and easily do that with any other weapon from a car). They also have a high-caliber hunting rifle, an old lever-action for fun target shooting, and two .22LR rifles to train kids on how to safely and responsibly handle firearms. That's not a large number, either, compared to their neighbors.

changed "west" (typo of best?) to "lowest" for clarity. Also "inculturalated" isn't a word.
