Aug 14, 2018 at 17:34 | comment | added | Doktor J | For the vibration aspect, if you had the ship's armor mounted to the superstructure via viscoelastic dampeners (e.g. dashpots), vibrations would be dampened significantly, and also could only transmit to the outside through these contact points. It wouldn't be foolproof, but it'd take a lot more algorithmic work to deconstruct the resulting external vibrations into any useful data.
Aug 14, 2018 at 16:15 | comment | added | Chronocidal | @AmiralPatate Make sure to fit one layer with randomised vibration generators (e.g. piezoelectric buzzers or tiny motors with offset weights) and it should produce plenty of obscuring noise. Make the layer 1 or 2 below that some sort of foam sponge to insulate the actual vibrations, and you could set up "ghost armies" marching around your ship conversing in Klingon for them to observe...
Aug 14, 2018 at 14:07 | comment | added | AmiralPatate | I wonder how exploitable vibrations would be if a spaceship had a multi-layered hull though.
Aug 14, 2018 at 12:47 | comment | added | Blade Wraith | @SCMorfildur a faraday cage doesn't need to be all encompassing in that way its just layered shielding. layers of chicken wire can have the same effect. and even weapon ports are armoured in regular warships in real life
Aug 14, 2018 at 11:55 | comment | added | user48721 | Does the hull of the space ship prevent all emissions at all frequencies from going in or out, considering that there are weapon ports, engines and such that won't be completely covered in armor?
Aug 14, 2018 at 11:43 | comment | added | Separatrix | @BladeWraith, I was thinking something along the lines of a laser microphone would do the job
Aug 14, 2018 at 10:40 | comment | added | Blade Wraith | Faraday cage is exactly correct. the vibrations would be only a risk if the alien vessel was physically connected to the ship, although if they had tech capable of detecting that at range, might as well give up straight away, they are way to advanced to contend with. Might be worth adding that if windows exist on the ship, they should probably have shutters on them.
