Right now, "any kind of map" will suffice to answer your question, and I think a better question would elicit better answers. What does the Empire need from its maps? How detailed? Should the map be realistic or symbolic? Is this a military map or a high quality merchant / civilian map or a tourist map? | |

(Historical note: maps isomorphic with the terrain began in the Renaissance; the Romans did not care.) Volumetric displays have been a thing since the 1960s. And ordinary stereoscopic displays would work just fine. And we seem to do pretty well with 2D representation of 3D space, especially if they can be manipulated. This civilization has FTL travel, after all. | |
