May 9, 2018 at 22:41 | comment | added | Corey Cole | Bluefin tuna is worth that much in Japan, but most other varieties aren't that valuable (worked in tuna fisheries for 2 years).
May 8, 2018 at 15:56 | comment | added | user47242 | @Fax and they would have to be able to match velocity, or every time they teleported, they would get flung off into space/the ground/a building.
May 8, 2018 at 15:13 | comment | added | Fax | @Draco18s The ISS is fast away (~7.2 km/s), not far away (~400 km). If a monk can't match velocity, it won't end well for neither the monk nor the ISS. And if he can, then he can start a satellite launching business instead.

May 8, 2018 at 14:12 | comment | added | Baldrickk | @Draco18s the rocket equation applied to teleportation - I never thought that they would ever mix.
May 7, 2018 at 19:32 | comment | added | Quasi_Stomach | overfishing goes against my moral code...
May 7, 2018 at 18:36 | comment | added | Shawn V. Wilson | @alexgbelov Okay, but there's still the addiction and overdosing. Cocaine is unsafe to use for many reasons, whereas alcohol in moderation actually has health benefits. So to your original point, making and distributing cocaine is less ethical than doing so with alcohol.
May 7, 2018 at 17:40 | comment | added | alexgbelov | @ShawnV.Wilson that's exactly my point; by making and transporting cocaine themselves, the colony will reduce the power of the cartels, cutting down the violence
May 7, 2018 at 16:54 | comment | added | Nemo | @ratchetfreak yep, that's a method. You need however to make sure that the content of the vehicle is never checked during transportation.
May 7, 2018 at 15:08 | comment | added | ratchet freak | @Nemo armored car transports, by the time the door is closed the goods are already in the secret warehouse/depot and only reappear in the car at the destination.
May 6, 2018 at 12:29 | comment | added | Nemo | Along the same line, secure transfer of precious items. Cash or jewellery couriers are extremely expensive. The main problem here is that they have to follow a very specific protocol, I suppose.
May 6, 2018 at 0:03 | comment | added | Pharap | Although I wouldn't really call cocaine ethical, it would actually help the world slightly because it would cut out the people who try to water down the drugs with bleach and rat poison. The lesser of two evils in a sense. (Unless you would prefer having drug users die at random, which some people do.)
May 5, 2018 at 16:59 | comment | added | Shawn V. Wilson | @alexgbelov The infrastructure to produce and distribute cocaine involves a lot of violent crime. Participating and supporting it enables the violence. If cocaine became legal, that might change. Even so, cocaine is much more addictive than alcohol.
May 5, 2018 at 3:40 | comment | added | Draco18s no longer trusts SE | Teleporting to the moon takes *scribbles on the back of a napkin* ... 11,945 base-tp-units while carrying 10 pounds. Or about 40 monks worth. OTOH the ISS is $3 \cdot w$ base-tp-units away... *More napkin math* Carrying another monk uses up all a monk's tp-units making it to the ISS...if we assume a monk can get there, drop off a monk, and make it back...leap frogging a monk to the moon...798 monks needed...getting those 798 monks in orbit takes...3^798 is 10^380 total jumps...Ok, not feasible.
May 4, 2018 at 23:18 | comment | added | alexgbelov | Would you say making cocaine is ethically worse than brewing alcohol?

May 4, 2018 at 18:48 | comment | added | Konrad Rudolph | The first two suggestions seem to be infeasible with the restrictions on number/distance of teleportation that OP put in place. I don’t see how teleportation realistically helps tuna fishing. The fish still needs to be caught. The transportation isn’t the hard/expensive part of tuna fishing. EMTs sound cool but fails the secrecy requirement. I also don’t see how money could be made that way. Actual EMTs have real costs associated, this isn’t the case here. How would this be billed?
May 4, 2018 at 18:19 | comment | added | scohe001 | @Agent_L fair enough. The issue is that the cover up's necessary to keep the secrecy probably aren't legal, which is why I went with "ethically responsible" instead. Essentially everyone who's part of their transactions should benefit from the transactions the colony is involved in.
May 4, 2018 at 18:17 | comment | added | Agent_L | @scohe001 The problem with moral code is that everyone has his own. You should really stick with "lawful in country X" route, because for some people NOT stopping the ongoing horrors of drug trafficking is violating the moral code. On the other hand - they're already breaking laws, the laws of physics : )
May 4, 2018 at 17:22 | comment | added | scohe001 | I like your idea for tuna fishing, but Cocaine trafficking violates my morale code, asteroid mining is rough since the moon is ~238,900 mi away, so my best teleporters might just be able to make it up there but would have no way back and EMT's are hard without breaking the secrecy. If you edit this answer to focus on the fishing and maybe add a little on the Japanese market for said fish like @GerardFalla mentioned I think this would be a much stronger answer!
May 4, 2018 at 16:42 | comment | added | GerardFalla | Good fresh tuna in tokyo for sushi and for ramen houses is worth ungodly sums of money, and no, no-one asks questions about how/where, otherwise the fisherman will never deal with them again.
May 4, 2018 at 15:21 | comment | added | user47242 | @scohe001 i don't know many details either. Since the fish are under water, nobody should notice that except the fish. As for the rest? I've got no clie lol.
May 4, 2018 at 15:08 | comment | added | scohe001 | +1 for the tuna fishing, that's an awesome idea! Can you expand on it a little? I don't know too much about that industry. How easy would it be to fish without being seen? Who buys fresh tuna without asking questions and how much does it usually go for? How feasible is it to hit that $10,000,000 mark?
May 4, 2018 at 15:01 | comment | added | JBH | I thought of asteroid mining, but that doesn't work with the OP's 100 mile/10# base limits. Tuna fishing is outrageously cool, though!

May 4, 2018 at 14:35 | comment | added | AndyD273 | As to cocaine, op is looking for "ethically responsible", and this probably doesn't qualify.
