On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

I imagine a lot of people have seen my name somewhere on the site. I was one of the first users (joined during the commitment phase before the beta began) and helped build the site up. Among many other contributions I started the very successful creating realistic worlds question series using some of my own reputation as bounties to set the quality bar.

I have a strong history of activity on the main site, in chat, and in meta. In addition I've been a pro tem moderator since the start and have helped guide and shape the site in that role. With the recent launch of the Worldbuilding blog Universe Factory I've also been contributing articles and interviews there.

A vote for me is a vote for more of what you've had for the last year-and-a-half: Firm but fair "light touch" moderation, stepping in only where necessary and trying to steer things in a positive direction before any moderation tools are needed.

My answers to the Candidate Questionnaire can be found here.

Hello everyone,

I'm a regular user of Worldbuilding Stackexchange proper meta & chat. Top 1% by reputation. Why did I go for Moderation? Simple:

  • As a heavy user, I am very familiar with the unique style and content of Worldbuilding, and have come to appreciate the ways in which it is different from the other Stacks.

  • I believe in light moderation, while keeping the site on topic. I will work tirelessly with the other moderators to promote our site online both within the stack community and outside of it.

  • As my Fanatic badge, my rep, and other badges attest, I am on this site every day, and with my current reputation, I already perform most of the moderation duties that I would be taking on anyway.

  • I'm not a moderator elsewhere, so I would be able to dedicate my full attention to this site.

About me: 31 year-old, suffered through a PhD in poli-sci & stats methods, now working in Business Intelligence in D.C., but at ease with topics from cell biology to astrophysics. I write short stories and create worlds in my spare time, although the book I'm currently writing is on Supervised Learning with Python. As a Romanian native, I'm also a (very civilized) vampire.

Hey there everyone, I am going to nominate myself for moderator.

I have been around World Building since it first showed up on Area 51. We had to convince the Area 51 moderators to reopen the proposal after it had been closed down. A few years later here we are, graduated.

  • Active regularly throughout the course of the day, I like to keep chat lively.
  • Work to aid users as often as possible, particularly new users
  • Help manage the topic challenges
  • Active in review queues, generally in the top 5 for reviews all time
  • Top 3% overall reputation
  • I am not a horse (horses cannot type)

About me:

  • 34 years old
  • Degrees in Philosophy and International Relations
  • I like archery and shoot often
  • I like forging and metalwork, blades are fun to create
  • Long walks on the beach are overrated

Why not the other candidates:

  • The other candidates cannot spell.
  • The other candidates want to make everyone wear a mind controlling symbiote.
  • The other candidates turned Kylo Ren to the dark side and are responsible for the death of Han Solo.

Justice for Han, vote James 2016

Greetings and salutations!

As one of the founding members of Worldbuilding SE, I'm nominating myself to be a moderator.

About Me

I have been building worlds for almost forty of my forty-five years. I have a science-based education, specialising in the life sciences, but also including studies in chemistry, geology and computer programming. I'm also an amateur student of history.

Why I want to be a moderator

I'm a fan of the Worldbuilding SE site, and I want to keep it running well. I often notice things that I could help with, but without mod privileges, I can't do anything but flag them.

Why should you vote for me?

  • I'm active on WB.SE regularly, and have a reputation in the top 2%.
  • I'm impartial - I'll judge each issue on its merits, regardless of its source.
  • All my flags have been helpful.
  • I regularly use the Review tools.
  • I'll look at everything I need to, but change as little as possible.
  • I visit WB Meta regularly.

Have a look at my Q&A answers.

Hi, I'm bilbo_pingouin!

Worldbuilding activity

I have been around Worldbuilding for about 8 months. And since then I have come to the site almost every days.

I am not very active in answering questions on the main site, which is reflected in my comparatively lower reputation (compared to other candidates). However, if you've looked behind the curtain, you almost certainly saw me around as I am very active on

  • Meta (Civic Duty, Mortarboard, 14 Q/ 52 A),
  • Review Queues (Reviewer), and
  • regular Chat user (outspoken).

Furthermore, I am familiar with the community. As an illustration, I am one of the 3 editors (and one administrator) and one of the main contributors to the dedicated chat.

I believe in a firm moderation approach. But I am always opened to discussions.

Stack Exchange

I am less active on the rest of the network, however I have answered a few questions on SFF, Politics and Economy.

I am a software engineer, with a PhD in Physics. And strong interests in politics, economics and societies. I am reasonably fluent in four languages.

Vote for me as someone who supports the community and helps it keep on track.

Hi all!

I'm ArtOfCode. Those of you who've been around for a while might recognise me; newer users may not have seen as much of me. Given that, I'll explain the elephant in the room straight away: I haven't been around as much recently because of various real-life commitments, though I have still been lurking and making an occasional meta post.

I can offer you a firm but fair hand moderating, with some experience to back it up. I'm a moderator on Open Source and Hardware Recommendations (and, before you ask, yes, I'll have time to do all three.)

I'm vested in this community's well-being and development: I've been around a fairly long time, I participate on meta, and I set up, write for, and occasionally help organise the Worldbuilding community blog.

And since everyone's got one of these so far: A vote for me is a vote for community and stability.

I'm throwing my hat in the ring. I found World Building on Area 51 while it was in the commitment phase and thought it was a worthwhile site to add to the SE. I've been here ever since.

I enjoy spending time here on the site and the added responsibilities shouldn't be much more than I already do. I already moderate the SE site Woodworking as well.

If I'm elected many of the review queue's will have more items for others to review! ;)

Salutations of your choice, ye Worldbuildlings! I greet you, the community.

I have been a moderator on Worldbuilding since the initial pro tem appointment, and I now stand before you seeking your vote.

My aim is to keep up the work I have already been doing. A vote for me as a moderator is a vote for a no-surprises moderation style. In my moderation activities, I aim to always be fair, impartial and to handle similar situations in similar ways.

I try to moderate with a gentle hand; whenever I am uncertain, I focus more on guidance than taking mod-powered binding action. This means I have relatively few mod-closures of questions, lots of comments (a large fraction subsequently deleted) to posts pointing out areas of improvement, as well as some flags intended to bring uncertain cases to the community's attention.

I aim to always ensure that any action I take as a moderator is something that I am willing to explain in public on our Meta, should the issue be raised.

While I have relatively few posts on the site, I often visit both the main site as well as meta several times daily, and in doing so stay on top of any flags raised by community members.

I'd like to continue as a moderator. I've been active on Worldbuilding since the private beta. I'm also active on meta, where I earned the first silver discussion (tag) badge. I think I have some decent clues about our norms and aspirations. I'm also an editor and regular contributor for Universe Factory, our blog.

I'm active elsewhere on the Stack Exchange network and have gained experience that helps me here. I'm an elected moderator on Mi Yodeya and The Workplace, and my highest-rep site is Meta.SE, where I've asked useful questions and provided well-received answers on a variety of topics. I understand the SE network. I'm also currently the highest-reputation user on Community Building, which is all about helping groups of people achieve their goals together.

As a moderator I'll keep doing what I've been doing -- no surprises. My job is to facilitate, not dictate. I try to take the smallest action that solves a problem, and I strive to always remember that there is a human being on the other end of the online handle. I'm fair, level-headed, and thoughtful.

I like binary stars, sociology, and consistent magic.

Hi there!

I'm HDE 226868. Here's a bit about me:

  • I'm 17, and a senior at a STEM magnet high school in the United States, having finished my final midterm exam ~ 2 hours ago.
  • I'm into astrophysics, which is my intended major at college.

Some stats and other stuff about me (because everything I write needs some numbers!):

  • I'm #1 in edits (1050), and the first person to earn the Copy Editor badge. Many came from tag wiki cleanup edits.
  • I'm in the top 3 in flags (92), and the first person to earn the Deputy Badge.
  • I'm a mod on HSM and Mythology, and one of the top reviewers on Worldbuilding.
  • I write for our blog (I'm behind deadline for my new article!).
  • I was behind the topic challenges here.
  • I'm active on WB meta and Meta SE.
  • I'm the number one proponent of the tag.

What I would do as a moderator:

  • Promote us on other sites. I'm big on cross-site relations.
  • Ensure that new users get a good introduction to the site.
  • Work on improving closed questions, so they can be reopened. Oh, and working on migrations to and from other sites.
  • Take on Wall Street

Oh, and no matter who wins, Don't Panic!

This election is over.
